Carmen Wong Received 2016 G. Keith Humphrey Memorial Award
Carmen Wong, a doctoral candidate in the Cerebral Systems Lab, was named the 2016 recipient of the G. Keith Humphrey Memorial Award. The award is presented to an outstanding graduate student in Psychology or Neuroscience who best exemplifies the philosophy and spirit of Professor Humphrey and his research.

Blake Butler Receives NSERC Discovery Grant
Blake Butler, a PI in the Cerebral Systems Lab, received a 2016 Discovery Grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. The five-year award is entitled “Structural and Functional Measures of Auditory Cortical Development”.

Special Issue of Hearing Research on Hearing Loss and Deafness Published

 

The January, 2017 issue of Hearing Research is a special issued devoted to hearing loss and deafness.

The special issue is edited by Drs. Blake Butler, Alex Meredith, and Steve Lomber.

Auditory Cortex 2017 is approaching!!

The 6th International Conference on Auditory Cortex is September 10-15 in Banff, Alberta, Canada.

The meeting is being organized by Steve Lomber and Yale Cohen and co-sponsored by the University of Western Ontario and University of Pennsylvania.

Five Lab members Attend 2016 Auditory System GRC

GRC Steve Lomber, Dan Stolzberg, Blake Butler, Stephen Gordon, and Daiana Pur attended the 2016 Gordon Research Conference on the Auditory System, 10-15 July 2016. The conference was held at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, and was chaired by Dr. Lomber.

NSERC Discovery Grant Renewed

The Cerebral Systems Lab recently renewed its NSERC Discovery Grant entitled “Functional Organization of Non-Primary Auditory Cortex”.  This five year award is the second largest grant awarded to a lab at Western in 2016.  See story below:

Hearing Research Special Issue 

Drs. Butler, Meredith and Lomber are currently editing a special issue of Hearing Research entitled “Plasticity Following Hearing Loss and Deafness”

Articles in this special issue will provide a solid overview of the plasticity that occurs throughout the auditory system, as assessed by available approaches to monitor brain function, ranging from single neuron recording in animals to psychophysical testing and functional imaging in human subjects.  The issue is expected to appear in late 2016.

Dr. Melanie Kok receives Governor General’s Gold Medal!

Dr. Melanie Kok, who recently completed her PhD in the Cerebral Systems Lab (May, 2015), has been honoured with a Governor General’s Academic Gold Medal.

Cerebral Systems Laboratory Receives Top Ranked CIHR Grant

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) has announced that the Cerebral Systems Lab has been awarded a five-year 1.05 million dollar grant to study cerebral plasticity following hearing loss and restoration. The grant was the top-ranked application in the Behavioural Sciences – C Spring, 2015 grant review panel. This award is the largest CIHR operating grant ever awarded to a lab in the Brain and Mind Institute at Western.
